Cecil Harvey is the main character of the game and the hero of Final Fantasy IV. He is a dark knight and commander of the Red Wings. It is an elite air force unit of the Kingdom of Baron.

In-game, you have many different options to fight; you can use magic or weapons, retreat, change the character’s position, parry or pause. Every hero character has unique skills. The game was the first to let you control up to 5 characters in their party; previous games had limited the party to four. In-game, player characters and monsters both have hit points. Attacks should affect the hit points until none are left; the character wins, or the monster dies. If all your characters died, you could easily restore the game from a saved game file. You can also restore your hit points by having your character sleep in an inn, or you can use items in the inventory of the party, even you can use healing magic spells to restore your hit points.
